Saint George
Legendary dragon slayer
Saint George is the patron saint of England, venerated in Christianity as a soldier-martyr of the Roman era.
The legend of Saint George and the dragon—in which he slays a beast terrorizing a village—made him a symbol of courage and chivalry.
Saint George's Day falls on April 23.
His red cross on white became England's flag and part of the Union Jack.
