grate

Fireplace metal frame

A grate is a framework of metal bars—in a fireplace to hold burning fuel, or over a drain or window as a cover.

To grate is to reduce something to small pieces by rubbing against a rough surface: grate some cheese.

Grating also produces harsh scraping sounds, and by extension, harsh effects on the nerves: Her voice grates on me.
