risk
Chance of loss
Risk is the possibility of loss, damage, or injury that accompanies a course of action.
If you take a risk, you act while knowing that the result might be harmful or negative.
Risk can also be a verb, where the object is the thing that could be lost or damaged: She risked her life to save her children.
The verb risk is also often followed by a gerund phrase: They risked losing their home by taking out the new loan.
The common phrase risk factors, is usually just another way of saying risk: Some risk factors will increase, while others will decrease.
