raku

Hot-removed Japanese ware

Raku is a style of Japanese pottery characterized by hand-molded clay, low firing temperatures, and removal from the kiln while still glowing hot.

The rapid cooling and exposure to combustible materials produces distinctive crackled glazes and unpredictable surface effects.

Western raku potters have adapted the technique, often emphasizing dramatic metallic lusters and smoke-blackened patterns: She pulled the raku bowl from the kiln with metal tongs.
