char

Singe the surface

Char has several unrelated meanings.

To char is to burn something until blackened, or to become blackened by fire: The edges of the paper were charred.

A char is also British slang for a cleaning woman or charwoman, and for tea—from the Chinese word for tea leaf.

In computing, char (rhymes with "car") is short for character, a data type representing a single letter or symbol.
