hazard

Source of trouble

A hazard is a source of danger or risk: health hazard, fire hazard, occupational hazards.

In golf, a hazard is a bunker or water obstacle.

To hazard something is to risk it or venture an uncertain attempt: I'll hazard a guess.

The word carries a sense of chance—something that might cause harm but hasn't yet.
