caravel

Lateen-rigged discovery ship

A caravel is a small, maneuverable sailing ship developed by the Portuguese in the 15th century.

Caravels had lateen sails that allowed sailing close to the wind, making them ideal for exploration.

Columbus's Niña and Pinta were caravels.

The design enabled European voyages of discovery along African coasts and across the Atlantic.
