dreadnought

Heavy naval vessel

A dreadnought is a type of battleship that revolutionized naval warfare in the early twentieth century, named after HMS Dreadnought, launched in 1906.

Its design—heavy guns of uniform caliber and steam turbine propulsion—made all previous battleships obsolete overnight.

The term now applies more broadly to anything massive and formidable, or specifically to a large-bodied acoustic guitar with a deep, powerful sound: He preferred a dreadnought for its bass response.

The word originally meant someone who fears nothing.
