caravels

Small sailing ships

Caravels were small, maneuverable sailing ships developed by the Portuguese in the 15th century.

Their lateen sails allowed sailing close to the wind, making them ideal for exploration.

Columbus's *Niña* and *Pinta* were caravels.

The singular is caravel: The caravel could navigate shallow coastal waters that larger ships couldn't enter.
