New World
Columbus's continental discovery
The New World is the Americas—North, Central, and South America—as named by European explorers who encountered continents unknown to them.
The term persists in phrases like New World wines (from the Americas, Australia, or other non-European regions) and in biology: New World monkeys have prehensile tails and flat noses, unlike their Old World relatives. (Lowercase new world describes any unfamiliar realm.)
