Face-up swimming
Backstroke is a swimming stroke performed while lying face-up, arms alternating in backward circular motions while legs kick.
It's one of the four competitive swimming strokes: She won the 100-meter backstroke.
The term can also mean any backward stroke or movement, as in rowing or tennis.
