blitz

Rush the quarterback

A blitz is a sudden, intense attack or effort.

The word comes from German for lightning, and originally referred to the rapid military tactics of World War II.

Now it describes any concentrated burst of activity: a media blitz, a blitz of phone calls.

In American football, a blitz is a defensive play where extra players rush the quarterback.

To blitz is to attack in this way, or more casually, to do something quickly and intensively: I blitzed through the exam. (Capitalized Blitz refers to the German bombing of Britain.)
