tabard
Sleeveless heraldic tunic
A tabard is a sleeveless or short-sleeved outer garment, typically loose-fitting and open at the sides.
Historically, tabards were worn by knights over armor, emblazoned with heraldic arms to identify the wearer in battle or tournament.
Heralds still wear tabards in ceremonial contexts.
The term now applies to any similar sleeveless tunic or smock: The docent wore a museum tabard over her clothes.
