orchestra pit
Sunken instrument section
The orchestra pit is the sunken area in front of a theater stage where musicians sit during performances.
The lowered position keeps the orchestra visible to the conductor but largely hidden from the audience, preventing distraction from the action onstage.
In opera houses and musical theater venues, the pit may accommodate dozens of musicians.
