chipping
Breaking off bits
Chipping is the act of breaking off small pieces from a surface, or the small pieces themselves.
Paint chips from walls, teeth chip from impact, ice chips off glaciers.
In golf, a chip shot is a short, lofted stroke near the green—chipping gets the ball up and over obstacles.
To be chipping away at something is to make gradual progress: She's been chipping away at her dissertation for months.
