Regency
Prince regent's decade
The Regency is the period in British history from 1811 to 1820, when George, Prince of Wales, ruled as regent during his father George III's mental illness.
The term now evokes the era's distinctive cultural style—elegant architecture, fashion, and manners associated with Jane Austen's England: Regency romance novels, Regency furniture.
The style features classical influences, refined proportions, and restrained ornamentation. (Lowercase regency means rule by a regent generally.)
