Jane Austen
English romance writer
The English novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an acute observer of social intercourse in the rising middle class of her time.
In her novels, she exposed the machinations of courtship and marriage, and characters’ motives in the pursuit of money and security.
She was a master of dialogue and irony, and her novels remain widely read and frequently adapted for film and television.
Her best-known works are Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Mansfield Park, and Persuasion.
