self-governance
Managing one's affairs
Self-governance is the ability or right to govern oneself, whether as an individual, community, or nation.
A colony achieving self-governance gains control over its own political affairs.
For individuals, self-governance means regulating one's own behavior without external authority: Recovery requires developing self-governance around food and alcohol.
The term often appears in discussions of autonomy, democracy, and indigenous rights.
