chaperone

Dance floor guardian

A chaperone is someone who accompanies and supervises others, especially young people at social events: Parent chaperones attended the school dance.

Traditionally, a chaperone was an older woman ensuring a young unmarried woman's propriety in mixed company—a role now largely obsolete.

The verb means to act as such a supervisor: She chaperoned the field trip.

Also spelled chaperon.
