cotillion
Formal debut dance
A cotillion is a formal ball, especially one at which young women make their social debut.
The term originally named an 18th-century French dance for four couples, with elaborate choreographed figures.
In contemporary American usage, cotillion typically refers to etiquette programs teaching dance and social skills to teenagers, culminating in a formal event: She learned the foxtrot at cotillion.
