abdication

Royal power relinquishment

Abdication is the formal renunciation of a throne or high office.

A monarch who abdicates gives up the crown, usually permanently: Edward VIII's abdication to marry Wallis Simpson shocked the British Empire.

The word extends to abandoning any serious responsibility: an abdication of parental duty, an abdication of leadership.
