façade

Deceptive outward appearance

The front of a building, especially an architecturally prominent one: the ornate façade of the cathedral.

By extension, façade describes any outward appearance that conceals something different underneath—a false front: Behind his cheerful façade, he was struggling.

The spelling facade, without the cedilla, is now more common in American English.
