whist

Bidless bridge precursor

Whist is a trick-taking card game for four players in two partnerships, popular in the 18th and 19th centuries before bridge supplanted it.

Players follow suit and try to win the majority of thirteen tricks.

The word also serves as an interjection meaning "hush" or "be silent," now archaic: Whist, the baby's sleeping.
