ghost ships
Crewless drifting hulks
Ghost ships are vessels found adrift at sea with no crew aboard, or ships that appear mysteriously after being lost or presumed destroyed.
The term evokes maritime legends of spectral vessels like the Flying Dutchman, doomed to sail forever.
More prosaically, ghost ships are abandoned craft that drift for months or years before washing ashore: A ghost ship from the 2011 tsunami finally reached the Oregon coast.
The term also applies to derelict fishing vessels and cargo ships operating illegally or without proper registration.
