bastion

Fortified projecting structure

A bastion is literally a projection on a fort but it is rarely used in this meaning.

Instead, it is nearly always followed by of in a phrase that exemplifies its figurative meaning: something that is seen as preserving, protecting, or defending some quality or condition, such as a bastion of freedom or a bastion of conservatism.

The connotation of bastion may be positive or negative, depending on what is being preserved: a bastion of male privilege will probably be looked on less favorably than the last bastion of high culture in the country.
