battlements

Fortified wall notches

Battlements are the notched parapets along the top of a castle wall or fortress, with alternating raised sections (merlons) and gaps (crenels) that allowed defenders to shelter while shooting arrows or observing attackers.

The distinctive zigzag silhouette evokes medieval fortifications: The castle's battlements overlooked the valley.

Figuratively, any defensive position: She retreated behind her emotional battlements.
