Knights Hospitaller
Malta's warrior monks
The Knights Hospitaller were a medieval Catholic military order founded in Jerusalem around 1099, originally to care for sick pilgrims in the Holy Land.
They evolved into a formidable fighting force during the Crusades, defending Christian territories alongside the Knights Templar.
After losing their strongholds in the Middle East, they relocated to Rhodes and later Malta, becoming the Knights of Malta.
The order still exists today as a humanitarian organization.
