Eastern Mediterranean nation
Cyprus is an island nation in the eastern Mediterranean, south of Turkey.
The island has been divided since 1974: the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus (predominantly Greek Cypriot) controls the south, while the Turkish-controlled north declared itself a separate republic.
Cyprus joined the European Union in 2004, though EU law applies only to the south.
