Richard the Lionheart
Medieval English king
Richard the Lionheart was King of England from 1189 to 1199, famed for his military prowess and leadership of the Third Crusade.
The epithet "Lionheart" (French: Cœur de Lion) celebrates his courage and ferocity in battle.
He spent little time in England, preferring crusading and defending his French territories.
He remains a symbol of chivalric idealism, though modern assessments are more critical.
