Constantinople

Istanbul's former name

Constantinople is the historical name for the city now called Istanbul, Turkey.

Founded as Byzantium, it was renamed in 330 CE when Roman emperor Constantine made it his capital.

The city served as the center of the Byzantine Empire for over a thousand years until Ottoman conquest in 1453.

The name persists in historical contexts and the famous song lyric Istanbul was Constantinople.
