Outremer
Medieval Holy Land
Outremer refers to the Crusader states established in the Levant during the medieval period—the Kingdom of Jerusalem, County of Tripoli, Principality of Antioch, and County of Edessa.
The French term means "beyond the sea," describing these territories from a European perspective: Knights who settled in Outremer often adopted local customs.
The term appears in historical and literary contexts about the Crusades. (Lowercase outremer is a blue pigment.)
