alms

Coins for indigents

Alms are money or goods given to the poor as charity.

The word is old-fashioned and slightly formal, carrying religious overtones from its long association with Christian duty: giving alms to beggars, an alms box at the church door.

Alms is grammatically plural but often treated as singular.
