Antioch

Ancient Syrian capital

Antioch is an ancient city in what is now southern Turkey, near the Syrian border.

Founded in the 4th century BCE, it was one of the great cities of the ancient world and an early center of Christianity—the place where followers of Jesus were first called Christians.

The name appears in various modern contexts, including cities in California and elsewhere named after the original.

The church at Antioch sent Paul on his missionary journeys.
