Levant

Syria and neighbors

The Levant is the eastern Mediterranean region, encompassing present-day Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and Palestine.

The term comes from a word meaning rising, referring to where the sun rises from a European perspective.

It appears in historical and geopolitical contexts: ancient trade routes through the Levant, the Crusaders in the Levant. (Lowercase levant is to abscond.)
