Mamluks
Cairo's slave dynasty
Mamluks were slave soldiers who became a powerful military caste in medieval Islamic states, eventually ruling Egypt and Syria from the 13th to 16th centuries.
The term comes from an Arabic word meaning "owned" or "slave." Despite their origins as enslaved warriors, Mamluks rose to become sultans and nobles, defeating the Mongols and Crusaders.
The system relied on continuously importing new slaves—often Turkic or Circassian—who were trained as elite cavalry.
The Mamluks controlled Egypt until Napoleon's invasion in 1798.
