Livonian Order
Medieval Baltic rulers
The Livonian Order was a branch of the Teutonic Knights that controlled much of present-day Latvia and Estonia from the 13th to 16th centuries.
These German crusader-monks conquered and Christianized the Baltic peoples, establishing a military theocracy.
The Order dissolved in 1561 during the Livonian War, its territories absorbed by neighboring powers.
The Livonian Order's castles still dot the Baltic landscape.
