King James Bible
1611 English scripture
The King James Bible is an English translation of the Christian scriptures completed in 1611 under the sponsorship of King James I of England.
It became the dominant Bible in English-speaking Protestant churches for centuries and profoundly influenced English literature and idiom—phrases like the skin of my teeth, a thorn in the flesh, and the powers that be entered common usage through it.
Also called the King James Version or Authorized Version, it is known for its formal, archaic prose style that many readers still consider the standard for biblical English.
