testament

Proof of something

A testament is evidence or proof of something: The building stands as a testament to Victorian architecture.

More formally, a testament is a will—a legal document directing disposition of property after death, which is why the phrase "last will and testament" exists.

In religious contexts, the Old Testament and New Testament are the two main divisions of the Christian Bible. (Capitalized Testament refers specifically to biblical divisions.)
