Meditations

Emperor's private philosophy

Meditations refers to the practice of contemplative thought or the written records of such reflection.

Most famously, it designates the philosophical journal of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, a collection of Stoic reflections on duty, mortality, and self-discipline: I reread the Meditations every year.

More generally, meditations are extended thoughts on a subject: meditations on grief, meditations on art and meaning.
