Jacobean

Early seventeenth-century English

Jacobean describes the period of King James I of England (1603–1625) or its characteristic style.

Jacobean architecture features dark oak, elaborate carvings, and heavy ornamentation.

Jacobean drama includes Shakespeare's later plays and the darker tragedies of Webster and Middleton.

The term comes from Jacobus, the Latin form of James: a Jacobean manor house, the Jacobean era.
