parables

Lessons through stories

Parables are short stories that illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson.

The term is most associated with the teachings of Jesus—the parable of the Good Samaritan, the parable of the Prodigal Son—but the form appears across religious and philosophical traditions.

Unlike fables, parables typically feature human characters in realistic situations, with meaning conveyed through analogy rather than explicit statement: He spoke in parables, leaving listeners to draw their own conclusions.
