Paradise Lost

Fallen from grace

Paradise Lost is John Milton's 1667 epic poem recounting Satan's rebellion against God, the war in Heaven, and the temptation and fall of Adam and Eve.

The phrase has become shorthand for any state of innocence or happiness that has been irretrievably lost: The old neighborhood is paradise lost—nothing remains of what we knew.
