sin
Trig function, briefly
Sin is a transgression against divine or moral law—an act that violates religious commandments or ethical principles.
The concept is central to Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, where sins range from minor failings to grave offenses requiring atonement.
The seven deadly sins (pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, sloth) catalog fundamental human vices.
Outside religion, sin describes any serious wrongdoing: It would be a sin to let this food go to waste.
To sin is to commit such an act.
To live in sin is to cohabit without marriage—dated but still understood.
