wherefore
For what reason
The old-fashioned and formal adverb wherefore is now largely replaced by its two synonyms: why and therefore.
It was formerly used to introduce why questions (Wherefore do you make such a request?) and appears now in some fixed texts such as prayers.
Wherefore is used as a noun in the expression whys and wherefores.
