salvation

Rescue from ruin

Salvation is rescue from danger, destruction, or harm.

In religious contexts, particularly Christianity, salvation refers to deliverance from sin and its consequences—the saving of the soul: He found salvation through faith.

More broadly, salvation is whatever preserves or redeems someone from a difficult situation: The loan was our salvation.

A person or thing that saves can itself be called a salvation: That job was my salvation during a hard year.
