First World War
Archduke's assassination aftermath
The First World War was the global conflict of 1914–1918, fought primarily between the Allied Powers (Britain, France, Russia, later the United States) and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire).
Also called World War I, the Great War, or the War to End All Wars—though the last proved bitterly ironic.
My grandfather served in the First World War.
