Versailles
Louis XIV's residence
Versailles is a city southwest of Paris, France, famous for the Palace of Versailles, the lavish royal residence built by Louis XIV in the 17th century.
The palace, with its Hall of Mirrors and elaborate gardens, became a symbol of absolute monarchy and French grandeur.
Versailles also names the 1919 treaty that formally ended World War I and imposed harsh terms on Germany—terms widely blamed for contributing to World War II.
The Treaty of Versailles redrew the map of Europe.
