no-man

Ghost among citizens

No-man is an archaic or literary term for no one, nobody.

It survives mainly in the compound no-man's-land—territory belonging to or controlled by nobody, especially the contested ground between opposing armies.

No-man's-land stretched between the trenches.

The hyphenated form preserves the old usage where modern English would write no man.
