casualties

Victims of conflict

Casualties are people killed, injured, or otherwise lost in war, disaster, or accident.

Military reports distinguish between killed in action and total casualties, which include the wounded, captured, and missing.

The word extends to anything damaged or destroyed by circumstance: Local businesses were casualties of the economic downturn.

A single victim is a casualty: She was a casualty of the restructuring.
