Cenotaph

London's war memorial

A cenotaph is a monument honoring someone whose remains are elsewhere—a tomb without a body.

The word applies especially to war memorials commemorating soldiers buried in foreign lands or whose bodies were never recovered: The Cenotaph in London honors British war dead.

Unlike a grave marker, a cenotaph is purely symbolic.
